 Latest Supposed Ivory-Billed Woodpecker Sighting

Over the last few days, there has been reports that someone in Texas has supposedly seen and photographed an Ivory-Billed Woodpecker. However, there has been some light shed on this report that leads most to believe that it is just a hoax.

 Audubon Guides

Audubon Guides is a series of I-Phone/I-Pod Touch applications which has been released by the Audubon society. There are four of these applications available at the moment as well as a free sampling of each of the four guides. The current guides are Mammals, Birds, Trees and Flowers/Plants. At the moment all of the current guides pertain to species found in North America; however, others may be released in the future.

Birdsight is a I-Phone/I-Pod Touch application that allows people in North America to keep track of their sightings of birds that they have observed. It is a very simple and easy to use application that can be used in the field, or while traveling about the city or a state.

 Sacramento Valley fox now found to be native

An interesting article about a species of red fox in the Sacramento Valley. It seems that this fox is indeed a subspecies of the American Red Fox and not just the non-native European Red Fox and has survived pretty much on it’s own for around 130 years.

 Bird Journal

This is the first in a series of reviews on software that has been created to help bird watchers identify, or keep track of the birds they have seen. There are not too many program out there, but since the creation of the I-Phone by Apple there are many applications which provide bird identification and species listing developed for the I-Phone/I-Pod Touch. There are also several programs available for the PC and even some for Mac computers.

 Vacation

Well, back in November I decided to go visit friends in Georgia for a month like i usually do at this time of year, so I have not been active here on my blog, but I plan on getting back to things soon.



 Bird watching/Wildlife Software

I have decided that I would start reviewing software that was created for identifying birds and other wildlife. There are many different programs available now, whether they are for the PC, Apple I-Pod Touch/I-Phone, or any other device that they have been made available for; however, I know I will not be able to review them all, as I do not have access to all of the different devices available.

 Brown Pelican Off Endangered Species List

Some good news, the populations of Brown Pelican in Texas, California and Louisiana are being delisted from the Endangered Species Act. Populations along the Atlantic coast and coastal Alabama were delisted in 1985. Population trends of these birds in Texas, Louisiana, California and Mississippi have increased over the last 40-50 years, according to yearly Christmas Bird Count numbers.

 Northern Jacana in Texas

Yesterday a friend and I were able to make a trip to Three Rivers, Texas and Choke Canyon State Park, where for the past week a Northern Jacana has been sighted. We left early yesterday morning to make the drive out there and while we ran across some rain, the trip was well worth making.
